restrictions

Pieces for the ‘Restriction’ online exhibition, curated by Amanda Lynch and hosted by Clayhill Arts. My prints are hosted in tray 8 and 9.

  • Four miniature pieces, approx. 3 x 4.5 cm, hosted in the smallest compartments of two type cases.

  • Letterpress on paper, tissue paper, printed content, and sheet music.

  • Hand-printed on an Adana 5x3 press.

Restrictions affecting places of gathering like cinemas, theatres, cafes, and concert halls mean that the sounds and conversations generated by and in such places are “suspended”: those utterances of sounds stem from the encounters of multitudes, but they are currently limited or entirely mute.

My artworks aim to give a visual presence to these suspended utterances of sounds: I use letterpress to represent the restriction of rich and chaotic contexts into fixed and visual spaces.

Greatly inspired by Walter J Ong's research on the relationship between orality and literacy.

Case pictures: details from Jo Hounsome Photography’s originals.
